2017 in review: The China contestation

Hardnews looks back at its year-long in depth reporting on China. In April, we looked at the growing tension between between India and China after the Dalai Lama’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh. We provided a detailed account on the visit, its implications and China’s desperate need to co-opt Tibetan Buddhism. In July and August, in the backdrop of the Doklam stand-off, our reporters travelled to Nepal and Sri Lanka to ascertain the impact of the fallout on the neighbourhood. We delivered in-depth, longform reporting from Hambantota and Kathmandu in the issue trying to understand the nature of Chinese investment in the region.

Finally, our November issue, the last in this three-part series on China, looked at China’s plan for the next 30 years and an article that traces the relationship between India and China, ever since PM Modi has assumed office in New Delhi.

We have over the year looked at the growing Chinese presence in Nepal and how India’s ties with the Terai region has veered into choppy waters. Our reporters travelled to Kathmandu and the Terai to provide a view not found in other publications.

This year has been marked by the intense stand-off between the two countries and Hardnews has curated reportage from all over the world which give detailed accounts of how the dynamics of the relations between India and China have changed in the wake of the Doklam standoff.
